What is the difference between melodic death metal and metalcore?
One of my friends says they are the same, while another friend says they are different. I don't listen to listen to enough of either to know the difference, so I was wondering what it was.

Melodeath originated from Gothenburg Sweden and is used to describe bands such as In Flames. It features melodic riffs and solos, different from the traditional death metal. Metalcore is derived from hardcore punk which is nothing like the Gothenburg sound. Breakdowns are a main part of metalcore.
