what manual setting do I use to photograph the northern lights on compact non SLR camera?

I wish to photograph the Northern Lights and know that I will require a tripod, but am unsure which manual settings I will need for taking photos on my Panasonic Lumix DMZ F27(?) It is a non SLR camera. Any tips please?

probably the night scene setting this will keep your shutter open for like 4 seconds and will give you a nice not too dark photograph

Where can you go for short breaks to see the northern lights?

I want to surprise my mum and take her to see the Northern Lights. I don't have dates planned, i just want to know the best time of year, and where to go for a short break near somewhere she could see them. Please note i live in England so it will have to hopefully be in Europe if this is possible!

The further north you go the more likely you are to see them. Of course they don't appear to order so it's a case of luck. Somewhere like Norway will improve your chances of seeing them.
