why the hell do people think listening to hard rock or metal is bad?
okay this is for people who DON'T listen to these genres. what's so bad about it? i'm kind of sick of all these stereotypes against metal & rock lovers..
what solid points do you have against these genres? or the people who listen to it?
I know that you said this is a question for people who aren't metal or rock fans, but I can explain to you why they all think this. It's leftover fear from the parents of the late 60's, when Black Sabbath first came into the picture.
For one thing, it was edgy to refer to the sabbath as "black" to begin with--after all, such holiness is far from being dark, right? In addition to that, their self-titled song "Black Sabbath" in itself is an incredibly evil-sounding song. The evilness of this song comes from their use of the tritone, "a musical interval that spans three tones". Its other name is "diabolus in musica", literally translated to "the devil in music", and often also referred to as "the devil's interval" or "the devil's note". It got this name originally from the church during the middle ages, because the interval was believed to invoke sexual feelings in a person who played or heard it.
Black Sabbath was not the first to use the tritone in the 60's/70's--Jimi Hendrix used it in the opening to "Purple Haze". There are many other examples, I'm sure, but that's Just One of the more popular ones. What made Tony Iommi's (the guitarist for Black Sabbath) use of the tritone unique is that the order of the notes were unusually evil-sounding.
Furthermore, the music was very heavy. Such distortion and overdrive had never really been used so heavily, so it was a very foreign concept to some people. Add the dark lyrics and very evil melodies to the heaviness, and you have a formidable formula. Even those who went to the concerts to enjoy the music themselves thought the music to be eerie and disturbing. The younger generation loved it, the older generation feared it. The fear felt by the older generation--and thus the authoritative generation--caused the music to be deemed the devil's work, and thus it was ingrained into their childrens' minds. A few kids were able to slip by and figure out a way to enjoy the music, but most were truly convinced of its supposed evil and unholy nature.
In later years, bands actually began directly mentioning Satan, the devil, or any other variation of such. Some bands really sang about devil worship, regardless of whether they were part of such worship (see bands like Venom, Slayer) while others simply made reference to the concept (Iron Maiden's "Number of the Beast"). Regardless of what the lyrics actually stated, people still took notice of the mention of the devil and took it very seriously. Many groups, often associated with the church, misinterpreted the lyrics, particularly in the case of "Number of the Beast" by Iron Maiden (in fact, in the following album, Iron Maiden recorded a backwards message in which they condemned such assumptions).
So, in short, Black Sabbath scared parents into telling their children not to listen to it. These same children grew up to tell their kids the same message, and so on, so many people even in today's generation condemn metal as being rude, dirty, evil, barbaric, and any other number of adjectives--all of which are true. As a metalhead, I would not have it any other way.
How come you never see metal / rock bands and singers on the news?
I mean, you always see pop and rap singers getting glamour and paparazzi on TV, but why not rock and metal singers? Linkin park and Evanescence are popular, but how come nobody talks about them or what they are doing like they would with any pop singer?
yeah right
but i think TV focuses only on the POP world. i think Rock music is just for Rock Lovers i am not saying it is bad but POP world is like mixture of every genre so people want to see more about them than Rock Stars do. Any way what u gonna say about Rock Stars they are living Rock Star life and every body knows it.
